potterglasses.gifI shouldn’t possibly do 12:15am theories as they can’t be substantiated but here’s my theory on why Harry Potter is so ripping good at worming his way into our imaginations, hearts, bookstores, fan-fiction and movies.

Harry as a character is everything. He’s the nerd, the popular kid, the bullied one, the hero, the kid from the crappy family (and the really fantastic family)…

We all relate.

He also is famous without having done anything – this lends itself to the minor probability of an almost improbability (One we try to pretend isn’t) in today’s world.

If that’s not quite enough, the Harry books have fun things like Bertie Botts Every Flavour Jelly Beans and photographs where the people move around. Who’s imagination doesn’t delight in chasing that!

I am a Harry Potter fan who quite proudly can say owned the books before they got popular. I don’t think I’ve seen the second latest movie (if so I can’t remember it – and they keep changing directors anyway) – I won’t bother with watching the movie or buying the new book until the hype winds down and I haven’t read the books hundreds of times – just twice, maybe three times for some.

As for my thoughts on the new book:

I think Snape has some good in him. I don’t think xyz person is fully dead. I do think that the last book will be spoilt if it is filled with copious amounts of romance between two certain individuals (but might secretly enjoy some of it) and I’m hoping that there is some question or something left unresolved – just to infuriate people.

Thus endeth my random Harry Potter theorizing, ranting, wondering and whatever else’ing.

Don’t be sucked in by the mania, but do visit the books in say thirty years time and enjoy them as a good – fun read for what they are.

…and I haven’t turned evil yet.

Books Culture Movies

girl.jpgOn Sunday two of our youth kids, d’Arcy and Jess got baptised! It was really encouraging, I was shell shocked by how well Jess speaks – this is a skill I could do with learning more about. Read more about it and see photos here.

Yesterday I discovered that Alex (one of my small group girls) is reading stuff by Rob Bell (This is rather exciting, but kind of freaky because she’s in Grade 6 – she’s starting to remind me of me except that I didn’t read theology books – I just read too many books long before I should’ve).

And here’s the link to Anne Jackson’s blog for Geoff (who’d forgotten it) and Christina who likes reading the few and far between well-authored Christian female blogs (Of which hers is one of – that’s me saying that).

kiss-2.jpgHalf an hour left of the one year mark off that Geoff and I have been ‘going out’. This time last year I was dancing around sharing the news – in the excited/avoiding way, not the literal interpretation. Unfortunately although the literal dancing thing explains a lot more freedom, that freedom doesn’t really seem to exist in my bodily movements. ( Bec, you’re being strange!)

It’s funny working out which dates to bother keeping track of (Should’ve proably exchanged this one for the engagement date -  but you just can’t).

A lot has happened in this remarkably short time. Back then it was new, new, new and fairly terrifying. Now it is much more comfortable, just as exciting (if not more) and I can’t believe how lucky/blessed (Pick a word depending on how ‘anti-the-luck-word’ you are, I’d use lucky simply because ‘blessed’ is a bit of annoying Christian cliche that doesn’t work with my vocab) I am.

Geoff’s the best guy anyone could ever get. And I got him. (*insert immature: “Nerrr, so there!”)

We are getting married on January the 5th. Lock it in those who know they’ll get an invite (The rest of you just ignore it) and don’t go wandering off on a holiday, trip or exchange (*cough* – I’m not trying to make you feel bad Jess).

As for the rest of you, I apologise for the slightly higher than normal population of brackets (parentheses) in this post and the out-loud deviations.

(Dear Paul and anyone else likely to complain about the ‘mush picture’,

1. Do note that the characters are both blonde, Geoff and I have brown hair.

2. The girl looks as though she is kissing the guy’s nose and not his lips, which keeps this blog relatively PG.

3. In real life hearts don’t go off around your heads when you kiss even when your eyes are closed, if so I would’ve heard about it by now as quite a few people have witnessed the action even if you haven’t. If you don’t believe me, we’re cool to demonstrate next time you visit.

These agendas render the image entirely fictional, although relatively demonstrative of ‘love’, so in the end I guess it comes down to how you perceive love.

Mush?

Or something more.

Sorry about the picture.)

Life Relationships

I can now tell anyone how to fix Google Reader if they happen to have the same problem as I’ve had for the past week.

I have been living in the future, my computer was under the impression that it was Febuary the 8th 2008 today.

This doesn’t make me feel very intelligent.

I am now on real time and getting fed! This is happiness for a nerd.

Life Technology

webb.bmpStrictly speaking the title is a lie, the music hasn’t actually made it only my Ipod yet – about to redeem that, but I have been listening to ‘She Must and Shall Go Free’. After mentioning Derek Webb a while back, when I saw an earlier CD for sale on $5, I figured I couldn’t go too terribly wrong.

The CD itself has a few moments of ‘way too country’ for my taste, but his lyrics are thought provoking, gut-sung and the majority of the music is really quite alright – not utterly brilliant, but not bad.

I found it quite hilarious that it originally (it’s a few years old now) got banned from some Christian retailers for using ‘too strong language’. This CD is essentially about ‘The Church’.

Anyhoo, off you go and read a review here if you’re ever so inclined.
