I have made some allusions to heading overseas shortly. We leave on July 2nd for the Solomon Islands, where I grew up, for the Pijin Bible dedication – which is what my parents have been involved in for a very long time. Geoff and I are overseas for 10 days, the rest of the crew are there for more like 17 days.

I haven’t spent much time yet pondering changes and the curiosities of going back to where leaving was so difficult. I will however spend a good portion of time thinking about it and writing about it. I hope to share as much as possible.

In the meantime if you are so inclined, please read the below and pray for the situation and for the team heading over.

Much thanks, she who remembers again that she is a third culture kid grown up.

Dear Friends,

In a week’s time we will be on the way to Solomon Islands. To think that the Pijin Bible will be dedicated in 11 days time is rather exciting.

The ship with the Pijin Bibles, Coral Islander II, is on schedule to arrive on 3rd of July.
We will have around 40 copies of the Bible hand carried in so there will be no problems with having the Bible there for the formal dedication.

Please keep praying that we will be able to clear the Bibles from the port on Friday 4th of July so that they will be available for sale at the trade and cultural show on Monday the 7th, and so that we can travel over to Malaita with sufficient copies as planned on 8th of July.

One thing that is concerning us is that the workers of Solomon Telekom are on strike. As the telephone system breaks down it’s not being repaired. Already my key colleague has no phone/email at her home – very inconvenient. The potential to prevent air travel is causing us some anxiety. Please pray that they will be able to solve their issues and that communications essential for air travel won’t breakdown.

Thanks for praying
Gerry and Melinda

If you do nothing else today, watch this video (link via theLongbrake). I was sucked in by the ‘Auki – Solomon Islands’ tag in the preview as I lived over there for a few years. But just wow. I nearly cried watching this, it’s so fantastic.

Blogging Humor Solomon Islands

Some great news re. the dedication of the Pijin Bible this year. That and Geoff and I will also be heading overseas in the middle of the year so I can show off where I grew up and celebrate with family and friends about it all being done. Finally!

Dear Friends,

I have just heard some wonderful news that the cabinet of the Solomon Islands Government has officially decided to declare 2008 the Year of the Bible in Solomon Islands. There are a whole world of possibilities in this, one of which it seems is that they plan to make a significant financial contribution to the initial publishing cost of the Pijin Bible (their Parliament still has to pass the 2008 budget).

The formal launch for the Year of the Bible will be on 24 February. Churches will be encouraged to focus on the importance of the Bible in their various morning services. In the afternoon there will be a Bible march through town toward one of the large churches where a special programme will be held.

The planning committee seems pretty excited about the Year of the Bible and we hope excitement will grow and spread! They will meet again next Wednesday for more planning and will be nailing down the theme of the year and a Bible verse.

Please pray that all the plans will be strategic and effective in getting people to use their Bible and embrace the Pijin Bible when it is published. There will also be two New Testaments published this year in Solomon Islands – the Wala language NT in March and the Natugu language NT & Psalms in July.

Thanks,

Gerry (Bec’s Dad)

Christianity Solomon Islands

A little behind in sharing this news but friends of ours in the Solomons could use some prayer.

This is what happened.

I feel a little bit selfish when I hear about stuff like this, because I think of the places I want to one day go back and visit and get frustrated that there will be far too many that will look significantly different to the way I left them.

General Solomon Islands

Oh look, Dad ‘dropped’ by the blog from the Solomons.

Solomon Islands > Honiara, Makira

One small minor issue there:
Honiara is no way on Makira. Honiara is on Guadalcanal. Makira is a totally different island.

At least it exists!

Nice try Blogger.
