When studying design you don’t get exams, you get these things called Folios. Folios require workbooks, workbooks require a hell of a lot of work.

I can deal with research.

I can’t deal with the supposed ‘right’ way of working. I work, in that I get straight on the computer and play. I don’t do sketches, I don’t mindmap and all that other crap. I don’t work that way, however hard I try. It’s ‘more correct’ of course, to do sketches, it’s more industry happy etc… but you can’t if you can’t.

This makes the ‘develop the workbook’ time difficult, in that I often have to backfill (we all do) – create crappy little sketches etc so it appears as if this is how I develop things (simply so I pass etc). Backfilling makes me feel crap.

Some tutors get it. Your workbook is how you work. You’re allowed to show things as you do them. This is as it should be. But some tutors just don’t get it. They take marks off you because you write something by hand (to save re-printing/wasting paper) or you work your own way minus certain conventions and they go ape (In their heads – which reflects on your marks), it’s a workbook! It’s how I got there. I got there right? Think reasonably! Be nice.

Assignments make me nervous.

Design Uni

Wow. How’s this for blog design, it makes my own fairly standard but still quite nice (well I think so) blog look flat and like a little worm house in need of renovation…

I am please to report CS3 arrived today, has been installed and I am now just waiting on a serial number…

I wish I were more adventurous in the design arena. I claim I don’t have time, but I sat on my couch half the day, so probably do.

Blogging Design

Sometimes I do watch television, this usually happens on a Thursday as Geoff heads off to play tennis.

I think I’ve talked about Grand Designs before. It’s on the ABC at about 6:05pm – repeats, and this is the ‘abroad’ version. I really don’t know much about it except that I happen to keep catching it and it’s this lovely mix of James Herriot (Don’t ask me why) and this cool enviro, owner-builder jam. I really, really like it. It’s creativity from normal people with a decent outlook on life.

…I really want to go to France.

Design

I am becoming a small freak when it comes to sustainability and design… it’s really rather interesting. Hey, hey ethics and design, it’s a happy pair.

So in the event of not clogging my bookmarks with eaisly forgotten and misplaced links, I am starting a new category: Sustainable – creative name hey? I am intending to share links as I go. This way, I keep records, those searching can be lazy and we and the world are pleased.

To kick it all off, here’s a link I labeled fantastic (while researching toothpaste packaging design).

Design Sustainable

I was going to post up my essay on Design and Environmental Sustainability but Geoff advises me that I wait until AFTER it has been marked. So I shall.

Meanwhile, I’ll leave you with the Gaia approach,

“Everything is connected to everything else”

How does this inform your living decisions then?!
