Like Analise last night I happened to catch the 60-minutes segment on Progeria. I wasn’t paying much attention at all to the game of Scrabble I was meant to be playing. I have seen similar programs before with the same girl being interviewed. I find medical stories like those of Progeria utterly fascinating, and it (Above so much else – perhaps disproportionately, perhaps not) pushes hard on the compassion buttons, while at the same time really inspiring me.
It is things like this that make me wish I’d had the determination to follow through with that half inspiration of becoming a doctor… whenever that was, once upon a time.
To find out more and to donate, Go Here.
There is no cure yet but they have a genetic lead – and are only waiting on the funding to follow through with that.
Tag to Rodney Olsen, to talk about Progeria (If I can do that?)

I discourteously did Onno Knuvers the dishonor of not linking to his website (Due to my use of an image of his in the previous post). So I must do that now.
He is – from my reading – a Dutchy (a very good start!) turned New Zealander. And by a further glance he has some very cute and clever little illustrations. Not meaning to suck-up to nullify my ‘crime’, but I did really rather appreciate this one. (And I can hear Geoff saying in my head, ‘No you’re not sucking up at all!’, in his amused/sarcastic way – scary that!)
So there’s the first New Zealander – at my online front door.
The second lot are at my actual front door. In fact they’ve been living in our rather minute lounge room the past two nights. My lovely housemate’s doing (Who, quite realistically and honestly is a much nicer person than I am). Our lounge room, as tight as it is, is a fraction more comfortable than this couple’s car.
Isobelle (housemate) met them at the free meal my church puts on a couple of weeks in a row. Very nice couple. They’ve fairly recently moved across and yesterday fantastically both managed to score full-time jobs which was fairly important. They are now living in a tent in our front-yard.
Why am I sharing this some what more personal-to-them thing? A couple of reasons.
a) So I can ridiculously claim I’ve got New Zealanders at both my online and offline front doors and that collates into a nice easy blog title.
but more seriously,
b) So that I can remind myself of the crap that’s been sifting through my head and some less than perfect attitudes I have towards these kinds of things.
Conversations of late at: Vocare, Young Adults and with those around me etc. have been quite centered around money. This situation in it’s own way has allowed it to hit home.
I have so much freaking stuff.
Ahh the wonders of networking and this tool designed to both assist and consume it.
I am quite a fan of the Internet.
It’s has led not only to dinner (see previous post) but also to paying nothing for an A3 folder for uni.
Let me introduce you to Freecycle.
“Our mission is to build a worldwide gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources & eases the burden on our landfills while enabling our members to benefit from the strength of a larger community.”
Freecycle is a worldwide operation but with local networks. I joined the closest to me several weeks ago and although haven’t yet put anything up to be given, I have been keeping my eyes out. Yesterday it proved fruitful.
I drove maybe 10 minutes to pick up the folder but payed nothing – saved about $10. It has been used before of course, but it’s still good and will be thoroughly useful.
A wheel snapped off my computer chair last night – perhaps I should look out for one of those… or you know, live with it.
Advoc8 has a new design. I got sick of the horrendous red one and so put up my hand. I also quite liked the fixed Home, Email and Feed icons on this blog so I poked them in as an afterthought. It’s certainly a lot cleaner than the last one, but what do you think? (I also haven’t bothered testing it in various browsers/screen sizes and I keep seeing recently how skewed this one looks so if you could let me know about either looking strange on your computer that’d be good.)
