Games

On Thursday Geoff and I traded in for Mario Kart (Wii). Love the game! Very worth your money as far as Wii games go, that and Paper Mario.

I never had the experience of playing Nintendo and the like when growing up, it was computer games like Croc, Commander Keen and Where in the World is Carmen San Diego (Where in Time was a lot better!) and the odd educational, such as GeoSafari. I tried for quite a while to get hold a joystick but proved fairly incompetent with it when I did.

The first computer game I remember playing was on a DOS system – there was a program to learn sign language and another to build dinosaurs, this was followed (When we finally got past that sad old OS) by an awesome violent chess game that Dad took off us because the queen bashed up anyone piece she took. I also remember quite fondly games like Mixed up Mother Goose and Jazz Jack Rabbit, and playing Prince of Persia at our friend’s (When Dad wasn’t looking – because it showed pixelly blood when the guy landed on spikes).

But no Nintendo. No gameboy, I really wanted a gameboy.

I wasted hours on SimCity and dollars on Civilization.

Now as an adult I don’t give a stuff about computer games, the web is an oyster as far as blogs are concerned, but games now fit as the occasional stab at Wii and a lot of the good old fashioned board/card.

It’s disgusting how many ‘traditional’ games Geoff and I own. Settlers and Munchkin are still holding their own, but we found this rather cool Carcassonne expansion today…

Strategy

Today I will do homework during my lecture… clever girl. Ho-diddley-um.

I am still strapped for ideas, I have two now – neither which really float my boat but there you go. I have found some sweet materials websites/resources so at least if I have a half baked idea, I can make my research look pretty. Thank you for your ideas. Love the lollipops Jess – however I vaguely recall them saying something about it not being a small thing ‘like a lollipop’ (Crikey they used the actual item!) that has minimal consequence to society. Suffer ye little children.

As I have been asking everyone and anyone for ideas, I naturally posed the question at the dinner table, my mother came out with some strange story about bears rubbing their bums on trees to get bark to stuff up their bum’s to stop ants getting in while hibernating.

I’m still not quite sure….

On a more cheery note, we taught my family (Well, Mum, Dad and Em) Munchkin last night and managed to force Dad to lose 5 levels, let Em almost win, and Mum triumph.

This is very clever strategy on our part, it means that Emily enjoyed herself, Mum will play again because she won (and found the cards so amusing) and Dad will play to get revenge. Scary thing is, I predicted Dad’s response word for word about five minutes before he said it himself. Do note, that this would be my response so the same situation.

Game on

munchkin_cover.jpgGeoff and I are pretty big suckers for games. Board games, card games, any games.

For Christmas Geoff took a punt and got me Blokus Duo (ie. Two person Blokus) and hit on a winner. It’s a strategy game that continually changes. I am unashamedly quite good at it, it’s my kind of thing – because it’s my kind of thing, we got the four person version for my Dad’s birthday present – the four person version is also very good.

The other game we’ve gotten into lately is Munchkin. Munchkin is a spoof of role playing games (Of which my opinion is still unsettled towards the negative).

Munchkin was introduced to us by our friends Beth and Brian who got us a set of cards for our engagement present. It’s taken a bit of learning to get it as it’s fairly complicated and still longer to establish any kind of strategy. We got together a few nights back with 12 of us and had a Munchkin evening (with three sets going). The game itself is quite amusing with stupid characters on the cards and ridiculous helmets etc. We own Star Munchkin.

It’s all good fun.

Geoff and I are keen on playing Settlers of Cattan (?) if anyone owns it? We’ve heard it’s good but want to borrow it before we go and buy.
